Erika Recaps Her Year As Mrs. Nebraska 2015

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be Mrs. Nebraska America 2015. Pageantry was never anything I considered competing in. The only pageant I had ever watched was Miss America as a little girl on television. When a friend of mine suggested that I give the Mrs. Nebraska pageant a try, I was very hesitant, especially not knowing anything about the system and what it all entailed. When I started looking into it more, that was when I realize that this was way more than just a "beauty pageant". Mrs. Nebraska America is about celebrating married women, their accomplishments, goals, and community involvement. I saw this as the perfect gateway to promote my nonprofit, Pediatric Cancer Action Network (PCAN). What I have been able to accomplish this last year has Mrs. Nebraska, has been instrumental in the success of PCAN being able to help many families in Nebraska affected by pediatric cancer. We more than doubled funds raised from the previous year and we are proud to say that we raised over $42,000 in 2015. Every dime raised for PCAN stays in the state of Nebraska, helping alleviate the financial burden that comes with having a child diagnosed with pediatric cancer.  I have loved every minute, every appearance, and every person that I have met on this journey of being Mrs. Nebraska… Even learning to walk in 5 inch heels. With nearly 70 appearances during my reign, I will cherish all of the memories of the fundraisers, parades, pictures and autographs forever! The best part is that my amazing family was able to join me on most of my adventures. Together, we made memories that will last a lifetime and we will be able to look back and reminisce for years to come!  I want to thank my incredible sisterhood of former Mrs. Nebraska's. You ladies have welcomed me with open arms and have been so supportive of me and my reign. The send off party was so much fun and I truly took all of your words of wisdom and encouragement with me to Mrs. America! I am so lucky to not only call you friends, but family.

Finally, I want to thank the people of the state of Nebraska. The outpouring of love and support I have received throughout my reign has been amazing! When I competed at Mrs. America in Las Vegas in September, I could truly feel all of the prayers of encouragement while I was there. Being able to compete on a national stage with incredible women from across the country was unlike anything I could ever imagine! I finished in the top 15 and I have my family, friends, supporters, and my state to thank for helping me succeed there! There truly is "no place like Nebraska"!

For a final time and with all my love, I am your Mrs. Nebraska 2015, Erika Shelton
